The Essential Guide to Women’s Fall Protection

Working at height is dangerous, and using the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is key to staying safe. Unfortunately, many fall protection systems were not built for women in mind.

But poorly fitting gear isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) understood this and recently mandated that PPE properly fit workers in construction.

That said, let’s look at what fall protection women need and how to choose equipment that fits their bodies, keeps them secure, and supports them on the job.

The Basics of a Fall Protection System

A fall protection system is built around three main components: 

        A.   Anchor point
        B.   Body wear (safety harness)
        C.   Connector (lanyard, SRL)

Each part must work together. If one piece doesn't fit or function properly, the system may fail.

For women, the biggest problems often show up in body wear. Most harnesses were designed using male body standards—longer torsos, broader shoulders, and less variation in chest and hip shape.

Women often have shorter torsos, narrower shoulders, wider hips, and different bust sizes, which can cause standard harnesses to fit poorly. This poor fit can lead to discomfort, slipping straps, pressure points, and in a worst-case scenario, injury during a fall.

Women’s-specific harnesses include shorter torso lengths, curved shoulder straps, contoured thigh support, and better strap adjustment around the chest and hips.

A proper harness should keep the D-ring centered between the shoulder blades, provide a snug but comfortable fit, and allow movement without loosening. Breathable padding, soft webbing, and multiple adjustment points help improve safety and wearability throughout the workday.

The Problem with ANSI Weight Testing

 

Another issue many female workers face is the weight range used in ANSI (American National Standards Institute) fall protection testing. ANSI standards test fall arrest gear, such as energy-absorbing lanyards and self-retracting lifelines, for workers weighing 130 to 310 pounds. However, many women in the workforce fall below that lower limit.

 

The Problem with ANSI Weight Testing 

Workers under 130 pounds—including smaller-framed women—may not be fully protected by gear that hasn’t been tested for their body weight. This creates a safety gap. Fall arrest systems may not activate or function ideally for lighter workers.

Employers and safety professionals must take this into account and work with manufacturers who acknowledge and address this limitation.

SRLs and the Risk for Lighter Workers

 

SRLs may present another concern.

 

Users under 130 pounds may experience inconsistent braking or "ratcheting" behavior. Instead of smoothly decelerating during a fall, the SRL may engage and release repeatedly—locking and unlocking—resulting in a jerky descent or even allowing the user to impact the ground.

 

Contact your SRL manufacturer to confirm that the device is suitable for users under 130 pounds and has been tested for ratcheting.

 

SRLs and the Risk for Lighter Workers

 

Lighter users may also experience more discomfort from SRLs. The device may retract too quickly, and its relatively high weight can yield fatigue.

Regular inspection, proper anchor positioning, and clear training on SRL behavior are essential. If possible, lighter-weight SRLs or dual-locking units designed for quicker engagement should be used.

Other Key PPE Considerations

Other parts of the fall protection system matter, too.

  • Helmets must fit smaller head sizes and allow room for tied-back hair or protective liners.
  • Gloves should be sized for smaller hands to ensure good grip and dexterity.
  • Work boots must offer the right support without being oversized, which can lead to tripping.

Each piece of gear plays a part in overall safety and performance on the job.

Finding the Right Fit

To get the right fit, women should be measured properly before selecting gear. This includes chest, hip, waist, and torso measurements. A good harness should not rely on guesswork.

The harness should stay secure without shifting or loosening. If it pinches, rides up, or doesn't allow proper D-ring placement, it's not the right fit.

Comfort is a key part of compliance—workers are more likely to wear and properly adjust gear that feels good and doesn’t interfere with movement.

Training, Inspection, and Maintenance

 

Training also plays a major role. Women should receive fall protection training that includes fitting their specific gear, identifying improper adjustments, and understanding how their weight and body type affect system performance.

 

Fall protection equipment must also be inspected before every use. Look for fraying straps, loose stitching, rusted buckles, or bent D-rings. Store gear in a cool, dry area away from chemicals or sunlight to protect its strength and life span.

Raising Your Voice for Better Gear

 

Women should also speak up when gear doesn’t work for them. Many job sites are still slow to adopt women-specific PPE, but change is happening.

 

Workers should advocate for better equipment, ask safety managers for more options, and give feedback when gear doesn’t meet their needs. Having women on safety committees or in procurement roles can also help drive these changes from within.

Fall protection is not one-size-fits-all.

 

Women deserve equipment that fits them properly, protects them fully, and allows them to do their work with confidence. Poorly fitting PPE isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a potential hazard.
