Who determines whether fall protection is required?
OSHA determines it is the employer’s responsibility to assess the worksite for fall hazards and ensure proper protection is provided. An employer-designated Competent Person must evaluate conditions, select appropriate equipment, and oversee compliance, while workers are responsible for using the equipment and following established safety procedures.
What are the three main types of fall protection?
The three main types of fall protection are fall prevention, fall restraint, and fall arrest. Fall prevention prevents a fall from happening, such as with guardrails. Fall restraint also prevents the fall from happening, but requires the worker to actively tie off and wear a harness. Fall arrest stops a fall that’s already started, with gear like Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs).
